I kinda think that if the lock is that easy to remove, it wasn't adding much security in the first place.

I guess you youngsters don't know filler caps, the key is supposed to stay in the cap so you don't forget to put it back after you put fuel in the tank. It's a security feature so that you would not be able to start the engine with your gas tank not closed or that you forgot the cap at the gas station.
